Volunteering

A small team of committed volunteers run the Holy Isle project. This is one of the many special things about the island. Working as part of the project is rewarding and challenging.

  Full time Vacancies 2012:
  • Kitchen (x2)
Read on for further information on volunteering with Holy Isle and contact us if you want more information on the vacancies, and if you want an application pack sending out.

Volunteering

There are a variety of ways you can contribute your time:

  • Volunteer Guests: We offer a 25% reduced rate in return for a half days work (approx 3 hours).
  • Short term volunteers: Occasionally we need people who can fill a temporary staff vacancy, to cover for holidays or in particularly busy times. People who have successfully done at least one weeks work here as a guest volunteer can apply to be added to our short term volunteer database. We may then call you as and when there is a need.
  • Full Time Volunteers: The Project is run by a full time team of 15 volunteer staff who commit to work on the island for a full season (March to October). During busy periods of the season, additional volunteers can commit to shorter periods of time (one to three months). Full time volunteer staff offer their work for free in return for board and lodgings
What you can gain.

Volunteering with the Holy Isle offers a valuable opportunity for skills development & personal growth while living and working in a small community / fully functioning guest house & retreat centre. Some, although not all, the volunteers are practising Buddhists, and there is a daily meditation schedule which visitors are welcome to join. It must be stressed however, that Holy Isle is not a Buddhist centre or a monastery. People wishing to experience life in a Buddhist community and receive Buddhist teachings should consider visiting Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Centre.

What we are looking for.

Requirements
  • We welcome applications from people of all ages over 18.
  • Must like working as part of team and want to actively participate in community living.
  • Mature and robust enough to handle what can be a physically & emotionally demanding environment.
  • Responsible and able to support and contribute to the community’s values as well as its structures and routines.
  • Open minded and willing to respect everyone in the community for who they are.

Terms and Conditions

Two week trial: If you are considering medium or long term volunteering with us, we require you to complete a two week work trial (1 day off per week) at a reduced rate of £15 per night.

The trial gives you and the existing community an opportunity to see if you are suited to life on a small island in a small community.

Occasionally, there are opportunities available to be filled directly after you have completed your trial. At other times, we will enter you onto our volunteer database and keep you informed of any vacancies as they arise.

How to Apply

1. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer guest, you can book in with the main office on 01770 601100 or reception@holyisland.org. Let us know that you would like to do a half days volunteering at a reduced rate. (* These opportunities are occasionally unavailable if we have a full team of full time and short term volunteers.)

2. If you want to get involved for longer periods of time:

  1. Complete an application form and send it back to volunteering@holyisle.org
  2. When vacancies come up, we will phone you for an informal chat and arrange a date for you to visit.
  3. Complete a two week trial at a reduced rate.
  4. Following your successful trial period, you will be asked to stay on or will be put on our volunteer database until a suitable vacancy becomes available.

We look forward to hearing from you!
