Always wanted to write, but not sure how to start? Perhaps you write but sometimes feel ‘stuck’. In the beautiful surroundings of the Holy Isle, this course will help you to free the flow of words in a safe, supportive atmosphere. Sessions may cover aspects of fiction and poetry, enabling you to start new pieces, take them home and keep writing.
‘Freeing the Flow’ writing course ran on Holy Island for the first time in May 2010. It was a resounding success, with participants commenting favourably on the benefits of writing in a group setting rather than alone, and on the inspiring setting. In the words of one participant, "Both the course and the island provided fertile ground for new ideas. An encouraging and enjoyable experience."
Classes have a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and are timed to fit around the meals and meditations of the Holy Island schedule. During sessions, participants are guided through various types of writing exercise, to generate words and ideas. These techniques can be taken away to use whenever you want to start a new piece or progress with an existing piece. Group members get used to reading/sharing work with each other, thus getting the most from the peer group setting and becoming adept in the skills of successful ‘workshopping’.
The September 2010 course will be able to accommodate returning participants. Beginners also welcome! .
Bring: Pen and paper
A laptop for use in your free time (optional).
Work-in-progress for a one-to-one tutorial (optional):
The main course is designed to leave time to experience the Holy Isle. If someone wishes to cover more ‘writing’ ground, a one-to-one tutorial can be booked with Kate, for an additional £25 (paid at the time of tutorial). If you wish, Kate will read up to 2000 words of writing in advance of the weekend (or up to 50 lines of poetry) for discussion during a 30 minute tutorial on the Saturday afternoon.
